Gain a Deeper Understanding

Throughout the program, students are introduced to theories of gender and sexual formation, LGBTQ+ liberation movements and contemporary LGBTQ+ issues. Learn how lived experiences of gender, race, class, sex, and sexuality intersect with colonial, capitalist and other systems of power. Use feminist, queer, and transgender theories to understand how LGBTQ+ liberation movements and cultural practices, the law, and policy affect LGBTQ+ rights and experiences. Explore theoretical and political debates that confront heterosexism, allonormativity, and cisgenderism.

The knowledge and experience gained from the LGBTQ Studies certificate prepare you for meaningful work after graduation. The certificate pairs well with any major but can be especially helpful to those pursuing careers in education, counseling, social work, visual and performing arts, or politics.

The LGBTQ Studies certificate invites you to broaden your perspective through required courses in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies as well as elective courses in English, history, sociology, and psychology. As an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural examination of LGBTQ+ histories, politics, and experiences, this certificate will prepare you to better understand — and advocate for — a variety of communities and populations.

Perspectives in LGBTQ Studies

Interdisciplinary and cross-cultural examination of heterosexism, LGBTQ social movements, and social policies that affect LGBTQ rights through the lenses of feminist and queer theories. Exposure to LGBTQ representations in literature, media, film, and popular culture.

WGSS 336

Psychology of Women

Advanced undergraduate/graduate seminar designed to examine how both traditional and feminist psychological theories and research apply to women's lives. Topics include sexuality, violence, gender roles, work, relationships, body image, reproduction, motherhood, and sexual orientation.

WGSS 345

Black Feminist and Black Queer Studies

This course will introduce students to interdisciplinary research in the academic fields of Black Feminist Studies and Black Queer Studies that critically examines the social justice activism, public intellectualism, and cultural productions of Black women and Black LGBTQ+ people in the United States.
